The Load Bearing Image of God's Presence

Peter uses significant OT structures to communicate that the Christian church is the key symbol of God's presence within the world. Any rejection that the church experiences is not from God, but the world's rejection reminds us that God chose Jesus to be the way of salvation. Those who do not believe will be unable to give an acceptable answer for why they rejected Jesus, as God has given the Son as the only acceptable way of salvation. By calling believers to Himself in Christ, God chose the church to be His people who minister and manifest Christ's presence in the world. Accepting this identity is a matter of faith that the church must embrace.
